Answers: Domain Name Transfers

[]What is a domain name transfer?
A domain name transfer will move your domain name from its current registrar, such as Network Solutions or Register.com, to Rackshare.

Once a domain name transfer is completed, your domain will be managed at our Domain Management System and renewable through our Domain Renewal System.

You will no longer need to use your previous registrar.

[]What is the process for transferring a domain name?
Domain name transfers are not a real-time process. For the security of all domain name owners, the transfer process requires you to confirm the transfer by acknowledging email sent to the Administrative Contact email address as listed at your current registrar.

Check the WHOIS record to verify that you can respond to email sent to the Administrative Contact email address.

The process for transferring a domain is as follows:

  1. Place your order online at https://www.rackshare.com/domain/. If you have previously registered or successfully transferred a domain name you may use our Bulk Transfer service.
  2. You will soon receive an email at your current Admin Contact email address. This email will ask you to confirm the transfer with Rackshare and our registrar (Tucows OpenSRS) by visiting a web page. An example of our Transfer Request message is here. You must confirm the transfer within 5 days.
  3. Once you have confirmed the message in the previous step, Rackshare will directly request that the current registrar transfer the domain name. Once the current registrar receives our request, they may - at their discretion - request additional confirmation from you before allowing the transfer.

Network Solutions, for example, requires you to confirm the transfer by acknowledging an email sent to the current Admin Contact. An example of the Network Solutions message is here.

  4. If the current registrar accepts Rackshare's transfer request, your domain name will become part of our management system and you will be able to manage and renew your domain name through Rackshare.

[]How will the nameservers of my domain name be affected by the transfer to Rackshare?
Your domain name's nameservers will not be affected by the transfer. If your domain's nameservers are listed in WHOIS as:
NS1.EXAMPLE.COM

before the transfer, they will be listed the same way after the transfer.
